Pileated Woodpecker at Hopkinton State Park

What fun!  I wasn't expecting to see a Pileated Woodpecker at all.  It was very near the upper beach and was content to work at the hole it was digging while I moved about in the noisy fall leaves just beneath it.  I could hear a second Pileated Woodpecker, as well, while I was watching this one but I never saw the other one.

This was about it for blue sky today.

Most of the sky was grey.

Don't you just love the "Bozo" red feathers!?

Too bad this one is not in good focus...

Yup, I think he sees me!

Look at the size of that hole!

Nice view of the three-toed foot

Note the tail position, leaning against the tree to help support the bird's perch on the trunk.

Impressive bill!  Seeing this bird is such a thrill!

I took a couple of videos, the first to record the sounds that alerted me to its presence, and the second, showing it pecking the hole.
