Birding at Jamaica Pond

George and I walked the 1.5 mile loop around Jamaica Pond this morning.  It was about 28 degrees with some wind but sunny and beautiful.  Jamaica Pond was established as a Boston park (and part of the Emerald Necklace) in 1892.  I was hoping to see a Northern Shoveler that had been reported there, and I did see it!

European Starling

Mute Swan

American Coot

and closer....

Northern Shoveler - a life bird!!  (See its odd bill - that's where it gets its name)

and a side view of its bill as it scratches an itch

Rock Pigeons

Redhead (female)

After much examination of this photo, people with much great skill than I have determined the above duck to be a female Redhead with slight variation in the bill.
